"A self-sufficient, omnipotent being needs no one else to unfold Himself. And so God can have a face: He can wink at you, smile, embrace you, play. This is freedom from the dry idea of God as an unembodied mind."
As our faith matures, we often "upgrade" God into something faceless: the Universe, a field, light, pure mind. It feels more respectable — while a face and character we leave to children's tales. Follow a simple logic. A self-sufficient, omnipotent being needs no one outside Himself to unfold His potentials — He can do it Himself. So having a form takes nothing away from Him: He can have a face. And with a face comes the rest — to wink at you, smile, embrace you, start a game, gather dear companions around Him. It turns out the "faceless force" is not the higher idea but the poorest one: a dry mind with no one to embrace. A face is not God's limit but His freedom to come right up close to you.
Don't lift God so high that He can no longer wink at you.
