"It's a very hot day and the tree is burning in the sun. And what is the tree doing? Giving shade to others. So too with us: stop being preoccupied with our own difficulty and be concerned about helping others."
When we ourselves are having a hard time, caring for others postpones itself: first I'll sort out my situation, then I'll be of use. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu points to a tree. Midday, scorching heat, trunk and leaves burning — the tree has it no easier than anyone. And in that very hour people sit down in its shade. It never calls out, "hey, come here, give me some water"; it outsources its needs to no one. In the Śikṣāṣṭaka, Mahāprabhu asks us to be more tolerant than a tree — taror api sahiṣṇunā — and the lecture puts it plainly: if someone needs something from you, give. The tree is burning too. It simply keeps making shade. Stop being preoccupied with your own suffering — be concerned about someone else's.
While it's hard on you, do one thing today for someone else.
