"A pile of bricks and a plan is not yet a house: you need the workers, and the family it is built for. But the world — who made the design, what is its ultimate purpose? In a laboratory you cannot say."
We are told science explains the world, with no God in the explanation. Here is how this came about. Take a house. To explain it you need four answers: the plan — where its form comes from; bricks, timber, steel — what it is made of; the workers who shape that pile according to the plan; and whom it is for — a family to live there. A plan alone is not a home, nor is a heap of bricks. Four centuries ago Francis Bacon drew a line: let philosophy discuss form and purpose, while natural science takes only two — the ingredients and how they act upon each other. Not because the other two are absent: the early scientists were mostly believers. You simply cannot put design and purpose on a laboratory bench.
Who designed the house is easy to learn. And who designed the world?
