"Your mind is material; it only knows material things. … A vulture is flying in the sky and looking for something dead to land on."
We look for where life will finally be good, and the mind always finds somewhere to land: another job, another person. "What do I do with my mind while I chant?" a disciple asked Bhaktisiddhanta Thakura. Your mind is material and knows only material things, he answered — it is like a vulture. The vulture soars high, yet it scans for something dead: it comes down and tastes it. So with the mind — whatever it settles on is jaḍa, dead matter, while Krishna is aprākṛta, beyond it. So Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu gives one instruction: while chanting, try to hear. The mind is not built for the Name, but your hearing you can give to it right now. The vulture will keep circling — let it circle, you listen.
For one round think nothing through — just listen.
