"There's no God, then life has no intrinsic purpose. … You can just make up your own purpose … when you die, then what was the purpose of saving the whales or anything else that you did? … This world has been created with a purpose and we exist with a purpose."
"It just happened that way" is the most common answer to why any of this exists. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu takes that answer apart. The widespread position today is materialism: only matter exists, atoms in the void, particles moving by impersonal, heartless laws. From that premise one conclusion follows: life has no intrinsic purpose, so make up your own — save the whales or anything else. The lecture carries it to the end: death comes, and what was the purpose of the saved whales? Such a position is nihilistic; it is simply rarely admitted aloud. The second premise is that a Supreme Being exists — and then the world exists with a purpose, we exist with a purpose, and the ultimate goal is one: love for God.
Over your beads: if everything carries a purpose, why have I come here?
