"Those who were always doing karma, material activities, to get temporary rewards — in the last moments their minds become blank and empty. There's a complete emptiness there. Ah, what was it all about?"
Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu was talking with a man who had reached everything people dream of: professor of economics at Harvard, then director of the World Bank. The joy of the appointment lasted two days, after which he was the same person again. With his own money he built a large hospital in South Korea where his wife is head doctor; famous and wealthy people come there for their last weeks. He walked the wards and noticed this: those who had worked all their lives for temporary rewards ended with minds gone blank — they stared at nothing, and great fear took hold of them. Those who had tried to follow a spiritual path and pray were shining and smiling in their last moments, and departed without any fear.
Ask over your beads: with what face do I want to leave.
