"You can never step into the same river twice: the water flows from the mountain to the ocean, every time it is different water. You say "this is the river" — but it is never the same. Everything is in flux."
Look at a candle flame. It looks like a teardrop — steady, one single thing. Inside it are millions of reactions: oxygen coming in, carbon going out, everything appearing and vanishing, and only speed gives the impression of one shape. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu carries this over to the body: air comes in and goes out, food comes in and goes out, everything is changing at every moment, yet we are sure it is one solid object. And he brings in the saying: you can never put your foot in the same river twice. The water flows from the mountain to the ocean, only quickly and held within its banks. You say "this is the river" — and that is true only of the banks. This mistake of perception he calls bhrama.
The shape stays in place. The water in it is already different.
