We are sure our views are our own: we reasoned them out, nobody tells us what to think. That is where we fool ourselves most easily. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu shows it as an almost physical experiment. Consciousness — citta — works like a crystal: set it on a red velvet cushion and it sparkles with red light; move it onto a blue one and the same light turns blue. The crystal does not argue and does not try, it simply takes the colour of whatever it rests on. So with us: the people we work and exchange warmth with are reflected in us, and little by little we take on their traits. The lecture says it plainly: we may carry the pride of being an independent person, but in fact we are the sum of all our association.
