"Just as a chariot driver takes hold of the reins … to control the horses, so in the same way by our intellect one must take hold of the mind, which is restless, uncontrollable and prone to making bad decisions that we might regret… for the rest of our life."
A word said in heat, a purchase made in a minute — you pay for years. The mind bolted, and the rest followed. In the Upanishads, Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu reminds us, the body is a chariot: the intellect is the driver, the mind the reins, and five horses are harnessed: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch. The horses rush at whatever they see, like any animal; a human being has one advantage — he can pull the reins in, and then the yantra, the machine of this body, carries him toward the goal. Then one question shifts the picture: where in all this are you? Not the chariot, not the driver, not the reins, not the horses. You are the one who rides: the passenger for whose sake the team is harnessed.
Caught the mind bolting? Remember: the intellect holds the reins, and you ride.
