"When they see their good qualities, then their love increases. And if they see a fault, a bad quality, then the love decreases. … This is transactional: "I love you" — but read the small print … before you tick the box and accept this relationship."
A familiar arithmetic. While the person beside us is good — caring, reliable — the feeling grows. A weakness shows and the feeling drops. We call this love and are even proud of loving someone for something. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu renames it in a way that stings: it is transactional. "I love you" — and at the bottom of the page, in small print, the terms and conditions; read them and tick the box before you accept this relationship. In Vraja it runs otherwise: doṣeṇakṣayitām — if Radhika sees a fault in Krishna, her love does not go down; if she sees a virtue, it does not go up. Her love depends on nothing. Such prema has a life of its own: it lives and expands by itself, whatever the beloved does.
Round after round, ask: on what terms does my love rest?
