"Śaraṇāgati, surrender, is the doorway to the realm of bhakti. Let go of your attachment to this world and say: "O my Lord, I am Yours" — then the sound descends and dances on the tongue."
Round after round, beads in hand — and all the while an audit runs in the background: how many have I done, why is today worse than yesterday. Chanting slips into being one more task I perform. Here is the door. Śaraṇāgati, surrender, is the entrance to the realm of bhakti, and it opens from the inside: loosen your grip on this world and say it plainly — "O my Lord, I am Yours". He repeats the phrase twice, as if checking that it has landed. And then the one who chants changes. The sound descends and begins to dance on the tongue, and a person says in wonder: I am not the one chanting. The Name has possessed me, the Name is dancing, my tongue is moving, and I am watching like a witness.
Before your round say one line: "I am Yours" — then listen for who is singing.
