Don't mistake a lighter feeling in the heart for sin burned away for good. Sukadeva Gosvami tells Pariksit: knowledge burns sin the way a forest fire burns bamboo — black, ash, and it looks like the forest is gone. But the roots are still in the ground, and the first rain brings the same forest back. So it is with the heart: understand something with the mind, and the old habit grows back at the first chance. Only kevala-bhakti, pure and unmixed, burns the root itself — the way the risen sun leaves no trace of the fog. Sit with your beads, and don't take pride in the ash: ask not for understanding but for the fire that reaches the root.
