"She just moves her heel like this — and the maidservant springs up to fetch what is needed. Who can imagine what happiness this is?"
When Radha and Krishna are together in the kunja, even Lalita and Vishakha keep their distance — a shyness restrains them before such closeness. But the young manjaris come and go more freely than even they do: before her maidservants Radhika feels no trace of reserve. Through the carved lattice they never take their eyes off her and read her without a single word — by a glance, by her breath. Her very breathing is a language to them: she is silent, only her eyes move, and the service is already underway in perfect quiet. One massages her feet, another fans her with a chamara, a third offers betel — each anticipating the wish before it is ever spoken. And in these most intimate moments, when Radhika sits, the heel of her foot touches a maidservant's chin; she has only to move it slightly — and the girl has already sprung up to fetch what is needed.
Who can imagine what happiness this is?
