Radha and Krishna have loved each other since childhood. But Purnamasi-devi — Yogamaya — plays it all out in advance: she summons Gargacharya, the finest astrologer, from Mathura to cast the horoscopes of all the young girls of Vraja. House by house he bends over the charts — and delivers his verdict to the parents: "Krishna has a fine chart, and your daughter a wonderful one. But these two are incompatible — marry them, and untimely ill fate will fall upon one of them". And so not one of the beautiful gopis — Radhika above all, already in love with Krishna since childhood — can be given to him in marriage. Their hands are given to others; they leave their fathers' homes for their husbands'. To all eyes, ruin. Yet this is the design: by Yogamaya's will their husbands never even see them, and the "disaster" itself is only a fine thread of the lila. For without obstacle the love of the Vraja gopis never blazes up in full glory — as mahabhava. What the astrologer called misfortune was Yogamaya's own hand, raising the highest love.
