"How is Radhika staying alive now in Vrindavan, without me? A chakora cannot live without seeing the moon — how does she live without seeing me?"
Krishna's heart is breaking in separation from Radhika, and to console him a drama was composed: heavenly gandharva singers were taught the parts, and when all was ready Uddhava called: "There is a play today, come to the theatre". He leads Krishna up the stairs to a beautiful balcony above the stage. But Krishna walks with his head down, without any hope, and weeps: "O my Radhika…" The curtain opens — and the play turns out to be about her. Radhika, in the madness of separation, is so absorbed in Krishna that she begins to imitate him: she sits down in the kunja, puts on a necklace of gunja berries, weaves a peacock feather into her hair, draws a kasturi tilak — she decks herself as Krishna. And then she glances at her own ornaments and is lost: who is this? She does not recognize herself. And Krishna watches from the balcony the one who has become him, and calling out her name, his heart breaks — but not for himself.
Cry out in separation — the Name draws near the one you long for.
