"This flute is very bad! It bosses Krishna about, makes him serve her — why is he kissing her and not me?"
Radhika looks at the bamboo flute pressed to Krishna's lips — and flares up with jealousy: "This flute is bad, very bad! Look how it orders Krishna about, how it makes him serve her." To her the flute is a rival, another nayika, a heroine he kisses instead of her. And how bossy she is! She commands the demigods: play music for me. She tells the Yamuna to turn around — and the river that was flowing one way, at the sound of the flute, turns back and coils into whirlpools. She orders Krishna himself: "I want to rest" — and he puts out his lower lip for her to recline on; "massage me" — and he rubs her with his fingers. "And why does he strain so hard for her? She must be terribly heavy!" Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill and stood straight as a spear; he lifts this flute and bends threefold, tribhanga. A plain little reed weighs on him more than a mountain. So, jealous as a heroine is jealous of her rival, Radhika scolds the flute — and this is the very mark of madana-mahabhava.
Be like the flute at his lips — keep the Name there always.
