"She takes hold of the bolt — and her bangles give her away: jingle, jingle, jingle. "Who's there? Who's there?" wakes the mother-in-law, and Radhika runs back to bed."
Deep in the night Krishna walks all the way across Vraja to Yavat and stands beneath a tree by Radhika's house, trying in the dark to draw her attention. She hears him — and slips quietly down to the door. The door is bolted; she lays her hand on the bolt and begins to move it — and the bangles on her wrists ring out: jingle, jingle, jingle. "Who's there? Who's there?" wakes the mother-in-law, Jatila, and Radhika runs headlong back to bed. Krishna hears it: "Jatila woke up, we have to wait." And he waits in the dark another twenty minutes. Radhika takes off her bangles — she will not make that mistake twice. Again the bolt — and again the mother-in-law calls out, and Krishna darts away. So the whole night passes: he is desperate to meet her, and she him. But the sky is already paling. The sun rises — and the tryst never happened: Krishna leaves, sinking down, his head bowed, altogether forlorn.
Call his Name all night — let the dawn find you still waiting.
