"Even though an ordinary person feels themselves to be free, they're exactly like a bull with a ring through the nose who's being dragged through their karma. … Karma comes from outside, but also from inside."
You walk into a café and "choose" a coffee. You see a dog and something goes cold inside, though this dog has done nothing to you. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu takes it apart calmly: behind every such motion stand raga — attraction, and dvesha — aversion. Old impressions whisper to the mind yes, no, yes, while it seems to us that we are deciding right now. An ordinary person is sure he is free — and all the while he is led through his karma like a bull by the ring in its nose. The pull is not only external: the main ring is inside, and it is our samskaras. That is what diksha is for — it begins to smooth out those impressions, so that a person is moved no longer by the old yes-and-no but by the wish of Krishna.
Before you say "I decided so", ask: who pulled the ring?
