"You see a rope hanging from a tree, but you think it's a snake — "oh, it's a snake!" — and you become full of fear. But when you become enlightened and realize it's not a snake, it's just a rope, your fear goes away."
You're walking at dusk when — there it is, a snake on the road. Your heart drops, you freeze, ready to run. Then someone turns on the light — and it's no snake at all, just a rope on the path. The fear vanishes instantly, as if it had never been. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu says almost all our fear works exactly like this. We tremble not at what is, but at what we imagined in the half-dark — at "snakes" that aren't actually there. Worry about the future, fear of loss, dread of tomorrow — how much is a real snake, and how much a rope mistaken for one? Enlightenment is simply seeing, in the light, what's there and what isn't. And almost all our fear, in that light, turns out to be a rope, not a snake.
With your next fear, ask: is it really a snake — or a rope in the dark?
