"When we turn away from God, consciousness is eclipsed by a negative afterimage — a void, a nothing. And that is what we cast onto the world: we think behind matter stands some insentient, self-existent nothingness."
Glance at a bright lamp, then look away — a dark blot floats across the wall. It isn't on the wall; it's a trace inside the eye, a gap in your vision. Take this schoolroom experiment: the same happens to consciousness. Turned away from God, from the spiritual light, it carries a negative afterimage — a void, a nothing. And without noticing, we cast that inner gap over the whole world. That's why it seems that at the bottom of things lies insentient, self-existent matter with no one behind it. Vedanta calls this projected emptiness Brahman. But it is not a fact, only the dark blot of an averted gaze. Turn back toward the Light, and the blot dissolves, and the world is full again of the One who holds it.
The world looks dead? Check whether you've turned your eyes from the Light.
