"If you're not feeling happy, if you're feeling sad, it's because you've forgotten God, that's all. So don't seek comfort in the world. … A cātaka bird never drinks water from the ground… takes only water directly from the cloud."
When things get hard, the hand reaches for whatever is nearest: food, the feed, a call to complain. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu's diagnosis is plain: if you feel uncomfortable, unhappy, sad — you have forgotten God. And his advice is just as plain: don't seek comfort in the world. There is a bird called the cātaka. Water is everywhere on the ground — puddles and rivers — yet she takes not a drop: she will not seek comfort from the lower plane. She lifts her head and waits for the rain straight from the cloud. That is śaraṇāgati, refuge: the cātaka simply knows where her water comes from. And then the contracted consciousness begins to expand, santoṣa comes, contentment; and only from that does bhakti begin.
When you reach for comfort — lift your head and wait for your own drop.
