"The brain is needed for consciousness to function in this world, but by itself it isn't enough. Like a radio: to hear the music the set is necessary — yet if no one is broadcasting, it stays silent."
From childhood we're told: the brain produces consciousness. Thoughts, feelings, the very sense of "I" — sparks firing in nerve cells; switch off the brain and you switch off too. Śrī Prem Prayojan Prabhu grants the brain is needed: smash a man's head and consciousness goes. But needed is not the same as enough. Take a radio. To hear the music, the set is necessary — and yet it doesn't make the music: if no musician is broadcasting, not a sound comes from the set. The brain is such a receiver: it manifests consciousness but doesn't give birth to it. To experience, to intend, to mean — these belong not to the brain but to the one who looks out through it: the soul, ātmā. The musician isn't in the speaker.
Today remember: you're not the receiver — you're the music playing through it.
