"If a brahmin makes a fire and keeps pouring ghee into it, what happens? The fire increases. In the same way, the more a person tries to enjoy, the more his desire to enjoy grows — and he is never satisfied."
King Yayāti enjoyed for a thousand years, then admitted to his wife Devayānī: the desire had not cooled — it had blazed higher. "I grew poor in intelligence, captivated by your beauty, and forgot my real duty of life: to know myself." He gives the image: if a priest lights a fire and keeps pouring ghee into it, the fire does not die — it grows. So with desire: however much you feed it, it only strengthens (SB 9.19.14: desire, like fire fed with ghee, only increases). The soul is spiritual; while a low consciousness covers it, it cannot feel its own joy — so it seeks outside, where the joy is not. The way out is not one more offering: Yayāti says "enough" and turns to his true path.
Don't feed oil to desire's fire — turn to the Name, and the craving quiets.
