"I cannot believe how cunning Krishna is: he came disguised as Abhimanyu and coaxed my own mother-in-law into sending me to the Yamuna for the whole night."
Abhimanyu is Radhika's husband in name only, and his mother Jatila guards her daughter-in-law more sharply than any sentry. How then can Krishna summon Radhika to the kunja by night? He dares the impossible: he takes the very form of Abhimanyu and appears before Jatila. "Mother," says the false son, "our family needs more cows and wealth; let Radhika spend the night beneath the tree on the bank of the Yamuna and perform a puja to Mangala-devi." Suspecting nothing, Jatila herself commands her daughter-in-law: "You must obey — go with your husband." And Radhika sees straight through it: "I cannot believe how cunning Krishna is — he has tricked my own mother-in-law!" Yet she will not be caught so easily: in Vraja there is no love without teasing. With strangers there is formality; where there is love, there is boldness, reproach and mockery — and the heart only grows warmer for it.
The Name is cunning — it arranges the meeting; answer it, refuse not.
