Krishna is six years old, in the forest with the cowherd boys — climbing trees, playing hide and seek, wrestling: this is the taste of sakhya-rasa, the friendship of equals. The boys stand in a circle — that is their whole wrestling arena — and two grapple in the middle. One throws the other on his back, leaps on top and shouts: "I am the winner! I am the winner! Who can fight me? I challenge anyone!" Then Krishna shoves his friends aside: "Stand back, stand back! The earth trembles beneath my feet, with my trunk I scatter the clouds in the sky. Oh Sridama, you are trembling in fear like a deer — run away quickly, for now Krishna the formidable, invincible war elephant is entering the fight!" And the boys roar with laughter — they brag and make each other laugh with a hundred jokes. The one whom no one truly can defeat steps into a children's ring, play-acting the invincible war elephant — only to make his friends laugh.
