"I cannot repay you for your love — not in a whole lifetime of Brahma could I return even one of your services. So be satisfied with your own purity."
The gopis convene a court. They spread a fragrant seat upon the ground and invite Krishna to take his place — in the dock. The session is open: Krishna is on trial. And they put the question to him: "What kind of lover are you, Krishna? There are three types of lover — which one are you?" And the Lord of all the worlds does not defend himself — he pleads guilty. "I cannot repay you for your love. Were I to serve you for thousands of years, for a whole lifetime of Brahma, I could not return even one of your services. You broke the iron shackles of household life — so hard to break — for my happiness alone. So be satisfied with your own purity: that is your reward." And his debt only grows — with an interest he cannot even keep up. The one before whom all the universes bow stands a debtor before the gopis — guilty of a love he can never, ever repay.
Serve the Name unconditionally, and he himself becomes your debtor.
