"In mangala-arati we first offer the lamps, then the water, then a handkerchief — and just so the maidservants at dawn wipe every trace of the night from their bodies."
The night in the kunja is nearly over — Vrinda has whispered: it is time, before the village wakes. Radha and Krishna sit up, still without strength, eyes barely open, leaning on each other. And now the maidservants enter the bower — lamps in their hands, exactly as we come to mangala-arati. What do they see? Krishna's aguru and musk-kasturi are left on Radhika's body, and Radhika's kumkum, her lip-colour and eyeliner are on Krishna's body. The maidservants notice where each mark lies, take a cloth and a little water and gently, stroke by stroke, wipe it all away. For in mangala-arati too we first offer the lamps, then the water, then take a handkerchief. And afterward they hold up a mirror to Radhika. She looks at the reflection, sees upon herself every mark of the night's play with Krishna — and fills with a quiet happiness. Why? Because earlier, setting out for the tryst, she had gazed in the mirror, yet that beauty Krishna had not yet enjoyed. But now she sees: all her beauty has been relished by Krishna to the last drop.
Serve in the small things — so chant the Name, treasuring each bead.
