"Don't be so easily available, — says Lalita. — Be that easy, and he will take you for granted."
Radhika sees Krishna — and her heart melts; already she is ready to swoon and give herself to him entirely, without reserve. But Lalita catches her: "What are you doing? What is the use of that? This way you will become just like Chandravali. Don't be so easily available: be that easy, and he will take you for granted. A servant you may enter upon whenever you like — knock at any hour and walk in. But a master you cannot approach so: guards stand at his door and ask, who are you? Make him wait, make him beg for the meeting." And to raise Radhika in his eyes, Lalita begins to scold Krishna before her: "This cheat, this rascal, the son of Nanda — I will not even keep his name in my mouth. Do not be submissive to him!" And here is the subtlety: this time Krishna is guilty of nothing, he is wholly innocent. Lalita kindles the mana not for any fault — but so that Radhika's worth will not fall in his eyes, and the sweetness of the meeting will blaze up hotter still.
Chant the Name without haste: reverence ripens its sweetness.
