Krishna and the gopis frolic in the crystal-clear Jamuna: first splashing, then drawing closer and closer — hand to hand, face to face — until Krishna suddenly seizes the gopis' fine white cloth, tears it away and swims off. The water is clear to the very bottom, and he is spellbound with delight, watching their beauty shimmer through it. "Enough, we are leaving now," the gopis decide, and hurry to the bank. And there they are already awaited: the manjaris stand at the very water's edge with fresh cloth ready to cover them. And a quiet service begins — the manjaris anoint the bodies of Radhika and all the gopis, and Krishna too, with fragrant oil, then rub the skin with amalaki paste until it glows.
