"Thousands of beautiful gopis were all trying to serve and please him — but he could not even see them. He was only thinking: where is Radhika? Where is Radhika?"
Radhika came to the rasa dance — and saw that Krishna had already begun without her, among a crowd of other gopis. She was hurt. She stepped forward, only so that Krishna would notice her; and the moment she was sure he had seen her, she turned around and vanished into the forest. On purpose. And then — here is the very heart of mana: thousands of beautiful gopis are serving Krishna, catching his every glance, and he cannot see a single one of them. One thing only fills his mind: where is Radhika? where is Radhika? He gets up, leaves them all, and goes searching only for her. After long wanderings, with a sakhi's help, he finds where she is staying — and she is in an unconquerable mana, durjaya-mana, and will not even look at him. And then the Lord of all creation approaches, ever so tactfully, and with sweet words begs her to give up her sulking. The one who walked away becomes the only one: her deliberate leaving turns the Lord into a supplicant at her feet.
Separation only wakes love — chant the Name even in a dry hour.
