Here Kṛṣṇa is parihāsa-viśārada, expert in joking. To be a servant, He says, means to accept another's superiority. Matsya serves Rādhikā's eyes — a fish keeps turning this way and that, and so does her glance; Kūrma serves the two tortoises at her breast. The device is called śabda-śleṣa, the embrace of words: one word holds two meanings at once, and a philosophical truth arrives as a playful compliment. By this Gurudeva shows where all greatness is aimed: it bows before beauty and serves it.
