Gurudeva raises the objection aloud: but the gopīs embrace Kṛṣṇa, and He is beautiful — do they not enjoy? And he answers plainly: of course they enjoy, no enjoyment is greater. The difference is not whether there is joy, but which way it faces: their hearts are so pure that even their own enjoyment goes to Him. That is why liberated souls of Uddhava's stature desire such love even today — in the present tense — and cannot obtain it. The mirror is turned away from itself: it reflects not the one looking, but what stands before it.
